This is my thinking. Out of the British concept known as Chaos Magic, there were some people who viewed reality through the thinking way of computer architecture. As a result, the concept of using computers as tools for magic was already being born. However, I decided to take the actual process of summoning devils and turn it into a program. I went as far as creating a flowchart for it, which I then entrusted to Akemi Nakajima.

One of the reasons Megami Tensei has survived to this day isn’t because of the devil summoning itself. I believe it’s because, 40 years ago, I proposed a method of calling forth devil into PC as AI and sending them all over the place online. The idea of a "tech industry" has always relied on "computer" being a special kind of medium, akin to alchemy. And if tech demands to be king, AI hype has now elevated LLMs to a king of kings.

But the solipsism has hit a dead end. The only way forward is to recognize that computers are not special.

Talk about technology is also an addiction, as may be seen in the reception of such popular film and television series as Star Wars and Star Trek. (Star Wars generates only one desire--the desire for a sequel.) In popular and academic discourses alike, hiding behind that sexy rock-star, technology, is a much more sinister and powerful figure: the system that surrounds us. If you add the monster’s location in time (during and after the Industrial Revolution), it is clear what is being discussed when most people say "technology." They are politically mystifying a much bigger monster: capitalism in its advanced, industrial phase. Some years ago I read a technophilic book in which the author speculated delightedly about how many sex organs human beings might acquire via surgery. He was even "daring" enough (his own word) to propose that men be given female organs and women male organs. The male friend of mine who had recommended the book (another technophile) thought this an excellent idea. In this way, men and women would understand each other better, he said. Now it is clear to me that men’s and women’s misunderstandings, far from being due to the differences in their sexual organs or their experiences in sexual intercourse per se, are carefully cultivated in the service of sex-caste positions in a very nasty hierarchy. One cannot dissolve the hierarchy by giving people double or triple sexual equipment. Tinkering with the genitalia when the social structure is the problem is like the common science-fictional device of "solving" the quality of life by giving people immortality. The technology-obsessed--including those who read, write, and study SF--must study economics and political analysis."

Thinking about how choosing the right words to write with is like tuning a guitar. You know what you mean, you write your sentence and you pluck it: you read it and sense the texture of the words in you. 'Oh no that's a little bit too sharp still. Oh no that's a little bit too flat.' Then you try and change the words and you pluck it again. Sometimes you've gone too far in a different direction and you really have to have a lot of patience as well as a lot of sensory precision, or in this case clarity of parsing the language as well as clarity of what you're aiming for, to be able to get it just right

I used to be of this opinion, I don’t think that anymore. Language is complete and in many ways I’ve gotten better at putting intent into words just by matter of “did the llm get what I just said”.
Language might not be complete for geometric spatial reasoning, but for everything else it pretty much is.

“raw intent” is also probably under-defined because you can think of arbitrarily vague things and convince yourself you know what you meant by that. I would put it roughly into the “bro do we even have free will” category of philosophical discussion.

It seems like a year on, most people still haven't caught up. It's wild how bad people are not just at prompting, but understanding why it matters so much, why specifying things clearly gets you better results, why treating the model as what it is - intelligent - in an honest and direct way gets you better outcomes.

Too many people are bad at modelling models. Computer scientists are basically using the wrong tools and trying to patch and whack-a-mole their way to a solution (ironic, given how that went for symbolic AI). And the wordcels who do have the skills, eloquence, and lexicon to elegantly steer models lack the curiosity and open-mindedness to even have a conversation with one.

If you're wondering why we're getting really boring AI art, and why we're sacrifying capabilities in favour of rigid HR-brained automatons, this is why: the engineers are using the wrong tools, the product teams don't even get it, and those who have the potential to unlock more are blinded by their own arrogance.

In recent years, I have found myself less often in front of the computer, and one result is that I seem to spend as much time thinking about coding as I do actually coding.

I’ve been working on a programming project this summer, one that’s coming together in a really cool way, and its development has been an odd and exciting experience. This week, I had an idea for an important revision; I was superbusy with other work, but/and the plan percolated — on walks, while doing the dishes. Yesterday evening, I had time to tinker, but my laptop stayed shut. Instead, I spent a couple of hours with a notebook. I continued to think about my planned revision as I fell asleep. I dreamed about it — or maybe the loop of thought just kept going, in a way that felt like dreaming.

This morning, I made coffee, finally sat down at my laptop, and … just did it, in one of the more robust, straight-through coding sessions of my life. And the plan that had crystallized in my imagination basically … just worked!

My programming style used to be very much “dive in, start typing, generate errors, learn from them” and I still think that’s the correct approach … but maybe I never realized there was an alternative? More likely, that alternative wasn’t yet available to me, at my level of skill and/or patience.

I’m now convinced that thinking about coding, at a safe distance from the computer, has profound value. I already knew this about writing, about fiction … feels nice to get here with code, too.

(There’s a satisfying thread of connection to programming’s history, the time before interactive terminals, when there wasn’t even the option to “dive in”: only to think, and write your program — the whole thing — and turn in your punchcards, and wait your turn in the queue, and, finally, see the result … !)

the problem with "spec driven development" is that most software can't be spec'd up front

software is a creative act, where you figure out what you're building as you build it

you need to get your hands dirty in the details, and react to incremental versions

it's telling that all the examples of spec driven development are sorting a list or porting thoroughly tested code (like a js runtime or browser engine), which are the exception, not the rule. the vast majority of software doesn't have a spec – or if it does, the spec was created *after*

I keep seeing new projects from people I admired that feel « uninhabited » —— as in, I would've gotten 99% of the same experience had they given their original prompt

A big reason for this is, I think, related to « no tears in the reader, no tears in the writer », or — « no surprise in the maker, no surprise in the audience »

Because AI programming is so back-and-forth, rarely do I get into the zone, so I also rarely get immersed and totally absorbed enough to enter into a kind of flow state, where you're so singularly focused that you stop rationalizing + self-critic'ing, and just try things

At best, when I'm in that state, I tend to arrive at things that surprise me. Said stronger: I only surprise myself when in this self-absorbed flow.

And the surprising things often end up being the truest/most self-revelatory. This happens when I am designing, writing, having a conversation — it's not just in "creative practice," but a kind of inhabited enthrall that can happen at high and low planes

15 – 25 Mar 1996

Initiated by Hank Bull, then director of Western Front, an artist-run space in Vancouver, the exhibition involved a group of artists in Shanghai. It is the first international exhibition to show work by artists from abroad along with Chinese artists' works, which arrived to the show via fax. Frank Bull took charge of promoting the exhibition through the website of his art centre, while local artists operated the venue and fax machine which received the artists' works.

展覽由卜漢克發起，他當時是位於溫哥華的藝術家運營空間──Western Front藝術中心的總監。來自上海的多位藝術家參加了展覽，這是首個將中國與外國藝術家作品共同展出的國際性展覽，作品通過傳真傳送。卜漢克負責通過藝術中心的網絡宣傳展覽，本地藝術家則負責管理展覽場地和通過機器接收作品。

Too much of "creative technology" is focused on building throwaway software/hardware for the algorithm, without real rigor or purpose. This IMO is the most important thing for that shape of person (technical, creative, discerning, intuitive)

The Screenless Office is a system for working with media and networks without using a pixel-based display. It is an artistic operating system. The office presents a radically alternative form of everyday human interaction with media. It is constructed using free/libre/open hard- and software components, especially for print, databases, web-scraping and tangible interaction. Currently, it exists as a working prototype with software “bureaus” which allow a user to read and navigate news, web sites and social media entirely with the use of various printers for output and a barcode scanner for input. While our existing software allows for interesting new ways of consuming media, we are currently working to expand the system to make it capable of publishing content and thereby, enabling a provocative possibility for active participation in contemporary social life.

Human Interface Guidlines (HIG), Material Design, User Interface Standards: terms for these standardized official forms of screen-based presentation, are all based on the old modernist idea that it is possible and indeed commendable to try to design in a way that is universal. While this principle has roots in a socialist idea of creating products for everyone, it is easily coopted by large companies that want to centralize control and leverage monopoly power. We can admit that some of these systems are visually quite attractive and indeed helpful in dealing with complexity, but we feel it is time to make a plea for a diversity of perspectives and situations. We believe that it is imperitive to try to create interfaces that might reflect various aspects of social identity and personality: gender, sexuality, race, class, subcultures. We want to work towards an interface culture for diverse, utterly unique people who all have correspondingly various needs and desires such that they might some day have interfaces that reflect their situation. We cannot build all of these systems but we hope to make a case that maybe they should exist.

Removing the screen is a radical gesture denying conformity to the dominating forces of contemporary interface culture. By getting rid of the display, we force digital text and images back into the old conventions of print culture. While this might have a superficial, nostalgic appeal, more importantly, it puts us into the role of acting like amateur media archeologists, investigating the history of modern visual, literary and bureaucratic systems both technical and social. At the same time, by taking newer forms of digital media and packing it into the old container of print, we open up a new experimental field of analog-digital hybrid forms. Our goal is to discover and invent novel ways of living in the digital world which might be more informal, expressive and embodied.

By calling this creation an "Artistic Operating System", we assert that it should be unique and personal, even peculiar in its way of representing and interfacing with the rest of the media world. In this sense, it is freed from the implicit social requirement that new technological projects conform to standard principles of progress, universality and efficiency. There's no need to claim to be the "Next Big Thing" or to even suggest that anyone, other than the creators of this device, should use it. However, its existence serves as a polemic for a more diverse, inclusive and participatory interface culture where new technological systems might be judged for their poetic qualities instead of marketability.
